A non-foliated metamorphic rock that is produced from the metamorphism of limestone. It is composed primarily of calcium carbonate. The name of the stone originated from the Greek word mármaron, meaning “crystalline rock, shining stone”, befitting its characteristics of being a stone of immense natural beauty. Impurities present in the limestone during recrystallization affect the mineral composition of the marble which is formed, and gives marble a wide variety of colors. Calcite marble is white in color, while hematite is reddish. Limonite results in yellow marble, while serpentine produces green marble.
